Inscription on reverse reads: “Floods render Whirokino section of main highwy impassable. Photo taken from a completed section of new concrete bridge at Foxton which when completed will carry the road for 60 chains across the flood area shown. 1 1/2 miles of road has also been raised. 12/11/38. J N Purcell, Foxton.”

Whirokino Trestle bridge near end of its construction in 1938. To the right the old road can be seen covered in floodwaters. The constant flooding of this section of road was the main reason for building the bridge. In the background the old bridge crossing the Manawatu River can be seen.
