PROSPECTIVE LAW.

A letter was received from a legal firm at Wellington, on behalf of Mrs H Bevan, complaining of damage caused to her land at Waikawa by the action of the Council's officers in making an approach to the river, which had the effect of scouring her land away. The writers further stated their intention of claiming damages for the loss alleged to have been sustained unless remedial measures were at once undertaken.

The Chairman stated that Mrs Bevan had not lost more than a quarter of an acre, and it was a fact that he (Mr Kebbell) had lost as much land as Mrs Bevan by action of the stream. He considered there would be no difficulty about obtaining evidence in favour of the Council. He also read a letter from the solicitors to the Council in support of their position in the matter.

After some conversation upon the subject, it was resolved that the roadman should be instructed to lower the crossing if necessary.

It was decided to notify the relations of a person in receipt of charitable aid that such aid would not be continued after next meeting of the Council.

The tender of Mr Howell, at £35, for work on the Arapaepae Road was accepted.

The letter was received from the Colonial Treasurer notifying that the proposals for a loan for $1000 for drainage of the Maungapouri creek at Otaki had been approved.

Proposed by Cr Kebbell, seconded by Cr Cridland, and carried, That Crs Simcox, Tompkins, Atkins and Bills be a committee to meet the Otaki Road Board and consult about getting an engineer to advise as to the Maungapouri Creek, and generally with regard to carrying on the work. – Standard.
