Had a water problem:

Early settlers in Levin not lucky enough to be near one of the few springs around the town found water a problem.

Friday, January 20, 1961 ... Mayor Mr E.W. Wise opens the valves to bring gravity-fed water back into the Levin water supply after reconstruction of the headworks.

Water was electrically-pumped from filters in the Ohau River while construction was going on.

The job, which was started late in 1959, was an arduous task designed to clean up the water, and cost about 7000 pounds.
