The hut, Alpha III, is on the important Southern Crossing which links Kaitoke and Otaki Forks. It is now available for use.

It is the third hut built in the vicinity. Alpha I was built about 1910, extended in 1938, and demolished in 1952. It was replaced by Alpha II in 1953 which burnt down in September last year.

Alpha III cost $20,000 and was a joint project by the tararua Tramping Club and the Forest Service.

The hut is 6.5 metres long and 4 metres wide, with a 2 metre verandah along thje front. It has 2 platform bunks, solid fuel stove, and water tank.

Materials to build the hut were flown in to the site by helicopter.
