Miss D W PILLAR

President Levin Red Cross 1968 - 1974

Miss Pillar came from Pukekohe to take a teaching position at Horowhenua College in 1950. With Mrs Moir, she formed school classes for Junior Red Cross home nursing and first-aid. Upward of 200 certificates were given each year.

When Miss Pillar's teaching days were over, she turned to Red Cross work with the Levin Sub-centre in 1960 and was a very active worker for many years. Her first task was to join the paper rollers and take charge of the bundles of rolled newspapers in 10 lb lots. On becoming Treasurer in 1966, she relinquished the overseeing of the papers, but in her spare time continued rolling papers on a Thursday afternoon.

As Treasurer she had the unwelcome task of changing Lsd to dollars. Miss Pillar was in charge of the house-to-house collection in 1967, and also in that year she faced another formidable task as Treasurer with the building of the new VAD room.

Miss Pillar was elected President at the 1968 Annual General Meeting, relinquishing the position of Treasurer to take over the higher duty. She remained President for 6 years.

She was instrumental in the formation of the Horowhenua Red Cross centre. Previously the Levin and Shannon branches had been part of the Manawatu centre, but now managed their own affairs and were responsible directly to head office in Wellington. Miss Pillar also helped in forming a new branch at Otaki.

Miss Pillar was also a member of the Levin Business and Professional Women's club and at one stage was Dominion President.

In the 1977 New Year honours, Miss Pillar was awarded the Queen's Service Medal for service to the community.
