The first of the State hydro power stations in the North Island, Mangahao, though small, has an important place in the story of New Zealand's electricity generation system.
There is a canoe slalom course immediately down-stream of the power station.

Opened in 1924, the Mangahao Hydro-electric Power Station located east of Shannon in the Horowhenua, was one of the first hydro-electric power schemes built in New Zealand.
