The Manawatu Herald reported on 31 May:

A very impressive little ceremony took place at the local State School yesterday afternoon, when a roll of honour containing the names of ex-pupils and teachers of the school who had paid the supreme sacrifice in the present war was unveiled. The names were painted on the wall and enclosed within a laurel wreath surmounted with the motto: “For King and Empire.” Miss Daniell, one of the senior girls, unveiled the scroll, and Henry Burr feelingly recited “God’s Acre.” All present bowed their heads in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect to the memory of the fallen heroes. The children then recited in unison Tennyson’s lines:

Lives of great men all remind us

We can make our lives sublime;

And, departing, leave behind us

Footprints on the sands of time.

The Chairman of Committee then made touching reference to the departed, pointing out that goodness and greatness were only accomplished by sacrifice, and applied it to the lives of the scholars.

In connection with the above, it was proposed at an early date to procure and erect a more suitable memorial at the school, and Mr Perreau has been authorised to collect subscriptions from all ex-pupils for this purpose.
