Train derails near Levin

Ontrack will be investigating why a freight train derailed near Levin. One wagon is lying on its side and several others came off the track.

The train involved was a northbound freight train, with eight wagons and no hazardous goods, KiwiRail spokeswoman Sue Foley said. There are no reports of injury to the driver.

The crossing on Cambridge St, where the train has derailed, has been closed to traffic.

Ontrack have advised police that the Liverpool Street railway crossing will remain closed till at least tomorrow morning.

Staff will be working overnight to repair the railway line so the train can be removed, Sergeant Marc Clausen said.

Police were unsure why the train derailed and Ontrack will be investigating, Mr Clausen said.

Police advise alternate intersections include the Bath Street crossing to the north and Tararua Street crossing to the south of Levin.
